Pike lures come in a variety of different shapes and sizes and it is important for the angler to
understand the differences in design and use of each lure. The first aspect to consider is the time of year and,
consequently, the water temparature. Pike, like all fish, will be less active in colder water and so in winter it
will be necessary to use sinking lures to find the fish in the deeper water. On the other hand, in the summer and
early autumn the fish will be more active and aggressive. Then is the time for surface lures and diving lures.
The action of each design of pike lure will be different too and it is vital that the angler
understands the particular lure being used in order that the retrieve can be adjusted accordingly. Retrieve some
pike lures too fast and the action will be completely lost. Equally, some lures, for example spinners, do need to
be retrieved quicker than others.
With the huge range of pike lures now available on the market it is becoming as complex as
selecting the right fly for trout at a given time of year! Choose the wrong one and you might draw a blank! Watch
out for our new series of FEATURED LURES, when we will be describing a specific pike fishing lure in detail and
giving advice on where, when and how to fish it. Watch this space!
